October 2011 Meeting Recording

Ross Mandel from Apple gave a great presentation about eLearning at our October Meeting.  Here's the link:

eLearning - The Perfect Storm recording

Thanks to Bob Wiker for making this meeting happen!

And he's not done yet.  Bob supplied this list of authoring tools that create open-standard, compatible content that plays on PCs, Macs, iPhone, iPad, iPod:

HTML Page Layout software (Adobe Dreamweaver, etc.)
Build HTML-compliant pages and you're good to go. CSS, JavaScript, too. PCs, Macs, iPad/iPhone.

Lectora
Lectora has always used HTML, CSS, and JavaScript as its output format. Works well with PCs, Macs, iPhones, iPads, and any Web browser.

Podcasts (M4V format)
Many devices can play M4V podcast files: PCs running iTunes, Macs, iPhones/iPads/iPods.

All Macs come with GarageBand, which you can use to create your podcasts. Drag-and-drop images (ie, PowerPoint slides or similar) onto the timeline, add your audio narration, and publish. Then upload your completed podcast (.M4V file) to a Web server and allow learners to download it. (Or, put it into your LMS.) That's it!

Articulate Storyline
Due to release in Fall 2011, this product can output HTML5-compatible content, which runs on all platforms: PC, Mac, iPhone/iPad, etc.

Adobe Captivate
Captivate v5.5 can output MP4 files, which play on all devices: PCs, Macs, iPhone/iPad/iPod.

Adobe is building the next version of Captivate to include HTML5-based output as one of its publish options. Therefore, compatible with all platforms, including mobile.

April 2011 - not held due to low attendance.

March 2011 Meeting non-Recording

February 2011 Meeting Recording

Ron Kantor presented a great session on cloud computing and it's impacts on eLearning design and development including some great examples.  Click here and Enjoy!

I also came across this cloud-based tool in one of my daily feeds that might be of interest:

Slideshare’s Zipcast: A light, Cloud-Based Synchronous Presentation Tool

In case you haven’t noticed, a significant trend in learning technology is the growth of small, light, cloud-based applications. Whereas older, established, solution providers focused on adding more and more features to their software, providers of these new apps keep the feature set low and focus on ease of use.

Slideshare’s Zipcast is one such product. It’s a Web conferencing tool designed for synchronous online presentations and is well suited for virtual classroom applications. Unlike more advanced tools, you can’t schedule or record a presentation and can only have a single presenter. Below is a Robert Scoble interview about the product. (RN)
